I have mounds of laundry waiting for me, but listing random thoughts here is much more important.
I really will find any excuse to not do laundry.
I don’t like doing laundry at all.
I do like when it is all done and put away though
I have to remind myself of that feeling to get my butt in gear.
I can’t believe we are already a week into February.
I can’t believe it’s already ~~Wednesday~~ Thursday.
Yes, I started this yesterday.
Sometimes I pretend I am on vacation in my own home.
One time I even tried to call room service.
It didn’t work.
I am working hard to get back in my healthy eating and exercise routine.
I ALWAYS spell exercise wrong. Why??
I love spell check.
I don’t love budgeting. Or doing laundry.
I could use Fall/Christmas candles in my all year long.
I love the rain.
And cobblestone paths.
Rain on cobblestone paths is even better.
I feel so grateful today.
Grateful for the seemingly simple blessings in my life.
It’s snowing!!
Which is good because that means it is cold outside & I have yet to retrieve the milk delivery from the porch cooler this morning.
Well, I better start my ‘to do’ list.
Which I am really good at writing by the way. If you need a good list written, I am your gal. It is the execution part I need to work on.;)

Oh, and I really will be posting projects more regularly…soon. It’s just been busy and weird around here.;)

Winter Touches

This winter has felt off here due to the lack of snow and the warmer temps.

But…just when I was thinking mother nature should just cut her losses and try again next year, winter came in full force! Since it finally feels winter-y around here I thought I would share some winter touches we have going on.

When it’s cold and stormy outside, I love the lights on the garland above our fireplace…this room is so cozy. I’ve removed anything to much like Christmas, but kept the simple winter touches that reflect what is going on outside.

Because it stays cold and snowy here for a good while, I like to keep the winter vibe going with my decorating usually through February. Come March though, I’m wanting & ready for SPRING!!

What about you? Do you find it hard to want to decorate this time of year?

I can’t believe how long it has been since my last post….wowza. I was hoping 2012 would come in easy breezy, but so far it’s trying to compete a little with crazy 2011.

Still so much good in my life…I feel truly blessed.

Oh, and I want to say hey to all my new friends! Thanks for coming along!! Wishing all my friends a Happy New Year! (better late than never, right? ;)

I really enjoy this time of year…a nice refreshing start after the rush of December, my birthday month and then Valentines Day and our wedding anniversary!

I feel full of LOVE! So, I am making the jump onto Valentines Day…

If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram you may have seen what I was playing around with last night. I changed up my first Thanksgiving, then Christmas, now Valentines Day vignette. I am either sharing ideas on how to be really lazy in your decorating, OR how to be really creative and resourceful by using what you already have in every holiday throughout the year. ha! ;) Either way…I am quite pleased with this LOVE-ly display.

I changed up my GIVE THANKS sign by removing the sharpie with rubbing alcohol (it did work!) and then adding in this sweet love phrase(which carries so much truth) in the same way…you can get the instructions {HERE}. I really love the simplicity of this.

The iced cherry blossoms transition perfectly into Valentines Day. I replaced the little Christmas signs with my heart cut outs… made from tracing a heart cookie cutter onto a Starbucks Christmas bag. The red and white work perfectly. I just made sure to not get any one part of the design that looked too Christmas-y.

I added in a couple more red accents… my garage sale books, a wood heart, and the gorgeous ribbon I used {last year} wrapped around my lamp shade with jute twine.

Oh, and some love birds of course:)

Christmas Touches

As far as Christmas decor this year, I didn’t add very much ‘new’. If you missed my Christmas House last year you can see it all {HERE}.

I did add a couple new things though…

My Grandma gave me a box of ornaments and when I found these little guys I remembered I had seen {this} on Pinterest. I have hung ornaments from my chandelier before, but love the delicate simplicity of this look.

I also added this vignette. I kept my Thanksgiving Sign up because I am very thankful at Christmas too…oh, aaaand, I love it;) I created this little holiday “tree” in under 5 minutes with supplies I had on hand. A few iced cherry blossom branches stuck in a French bucket and little Christmas signs pinned on with clothespins. A few Santa touches and this spot was finished.

I am feeling like next year I want to change up my Christmas Decorations. With out losing the special pieces that we love getting out every year, experiencing that warm nostalgic feeling.

Christmas Greens

This little Christmas Vignette on our piano turned out to be an eclectic mix of metals, colors and textures. Staying with a green color palette, I mixed in a lot of different tones to achieve this sort of rustic natural feel with touches of sparkle that gives off a warm cozy vibe.

I gathered pieces from around the house, some that I have used for Christmas decor in other areas of our home to create this subtle Christmas display.

I used my moss trees and place them on random mismatched candle sticks and for more texture and dimension added in some pine sprigs at the bottom of each tree. I filled one of my favorite containers with my fall acorns and more pine. A Christmas star and also a vintage style Santa for a pop of color & whimsy.

Now, when I started this I had a round clock hanging above, but it just was too cold. I thought I’d try this wreath from my Etsy Shop and it was just what it needed…I am now working on making myself one similar because it is just too perfect in this spot! {eh, the laundry doesn’t need folding, right? ;)}

So play around with your decorations in different places! I think a lot of times we get used to having our decor exactly where they have always been or where you initially purchased an item for. But there are no rules on changing it up and sometimes I think you’ll find you like things better a different way.

Oh, and I casually draped lights throughout to give a warm Christmas glow at night…I love it.

Christmas Kissing Ball Tutorial

Christmas Kissing Balls are one of my favorite decorations to make during the holidays. I really enjoy creating them & I have fun with all different custom orders. I decided to bring you along as I created this custom ball for a sweet Etsy customer. I posted a tutorial a couple years ago {HERE}, but decided an updated version was due…my picture quality has improved a bit, I hope;)

Supplies

moss ball (you can wrap a foam ball yourself or purchase one pre-wrapped)
pine sprigs, pine cones, acorns, berries, greens, etc.
About 2 yards of ribbon(depending on how far you want it to hang)
hot glue gun and glue (optional)

Steps

Get your moss ball. I used a pre-wrapped 6 inch moss ball.
Take your chosen ribbon and wrap your ball, sort of like a present twisting at the bottom and wrapping back up to the top. *Leave one end longer to hang
Bring the ribbon back up to the top. Make sure it is even with your twist at the bottom and then wrap it under itself.
Tie a knot making sure your longer side is the length you want it to hang.
Add in a couple more loops by wrapping wire around another piece of ribbon and stick it in leaving the other end to drape down.
Add in you pine, berries, and other goodies keeping it somewhat symmetrical, but not too ‘matchy’. You can simply stick them in the foam or I like to secure with a little hot glue as well. Just keep adding in layers until you get your desired look and fullness. Keep checking as you go to make sure it hangs balanced by holding it up from the top of your ribbon. You can add weight around with your foliage accordingly.

Once you get the look you want, neatly trim your ribbons. If you used wired ribbon you can manipulate it a little like I did with with this one. Make a looped knot at the top for hanging… and there you go!

Hang from your ceiling, an entry chandelier (that’s where mine is), or wherever you see fit. They make great hostess gifts for parties too!

Give Thanks

If you follow me on facebook you may have seen the link I shared yesterday. I was going through my old posts from last year and came across this one and it was a great reminder for me to savor the rest of this amazing season. Even though the stores {and my custom wreath orders} are telling me it’s Christmas, it still is in fact November and there is another important Holiday coming up that shouldn’t be over looked.

I managed to get all my Halloween decor down yesterday…woohoo!…and wanted to add a Thanksgiving vibe in. I am working on being grateful for the seemingly simple blessings in my I take for granted and trying to write them down everyday. I decided a little reminder by the garage door I go in and out of 100 times a day would be perfect.

I picked up this wood frame with glass at a garage sell about 4 years ago. After I made my burlap mat for our family picture in May of 2010, I thought of putting burlap behind the glass and maybe adding a decal onto the glass…well here we were Nov 1, 2011 and my empty frame still sat. So I took action and put a scrap of burlap behind the glass. I knew I wanted these two words and remember seeing framed memo boards, calendars and menu boards from framed glass around blogland. I also saw this cute memo board on Pinterest.

I tried a few times to freehand it, but couldn’t get it right. I then printed out the words on a sheet of paper in the font I wanted, taped it on the inside of the glass and traced it on the top of the glass with a sharpie. ** I didn’t have a dry erase marker and I didn’t want to wait…I read that alcohol will remove sharpie from glass if I ever want to change it though, so we’ll see**

I really love how it turned out. :)

To give it more presence, I added a thrift store frame around it along with my grandma’s silver platters I used in my Fall display. Some little gourd & pumpkin friends below and I have my thankful reminder/Thanksgiving vignette.

The weather is gorgeous here and I am loving all the fall colors that are around. I hope you all are enjoying the rest of this season as well!

I am a day late but for the month of November I will be sharing one thing I am grateful for everyday on Twitter & Facebook again this year.

Spooky Vignette

I’m getting ready to host a couple Halloween Parties next week…it’s getting pretty spooky! Like I said, I am not going all out like last year but I am adding a few fun focal points. Here is one of my haunted vignettes.

I absolutely LOVE Gina’s mantel and it inspired my crooked shutters. If you haven’t seen her mantel she said a couple weeks ago, head over to The Shabby Creek Cottage and check it out…you won’t be disappointed!

Once I had my shutters up (which I just hung diagonally on a single nail) I draped my torn gauzy piece haphazardly down them. Add in some roses with moss and webs, a few dollar store skulls, and some mice trapped in a lantern.

To finish it up I stuck up my Martha Stewart bats and I was finished. Now on to planning some food! Are you hosting any parties this year?

Outdoor Halloween

Last year I went all out for Halloween (which I love to do) but this year I toned it down a bit. For my front porch I kept my Fall Wreath up and just added in little black crows from the dollar store to give a haunting feel. I also brought out my Dead & Breakfast sign I made last year with help from BH&G. You can find more details about it HERE.

My girls love to help with Halloween so will be adding in our pumpkins and maybe some ‘webs’.

Autumn Centerpiece

I’ve been putting some more Autumn Touches around my house.

I brought out this little antique urn I bought at an auction right before I got married…I think it was the first antique I ever purchased! Anyway I love it. I love it’s dents and dings, it’s marks, scratches and flaws. It’s charm.

I bought these wonderfully fall-ish pumpkin guys on clearance {either last year or the year before} for little of nothing. Aren’t they cute? I stuck one atop the urn and the other two on either side.

For another layer and texture I put the urn on this ‘mat’ I made out of old wood from my grandpa’s greenhouse.

A little touch of fall that was inexpensive & uncomplicated…exactly what I’m liking these days:)

P.S. So, I tried to not say ‘simple’ once in this post…it was hard! ;)

Can you tell I am all about simple these days? Ha ha, I think because my life has been so crazy this past year I just want simplicity, calm and serenity. Easier said than done, but I do feel it in my fall mantel.

I used the garland from last year and my garage sale dried gourds. {I love them.} I kept the books I already had up there and that was it! I hung my dried magnolia leaf wreath with burlap ribbon on the fireplace screen like I did last year in my front room. A few acorns on the side table and that was it!

A few small touches of fall give my family room a warm harvest feel. I changed up the look from last year a bit just my moving some things around from different rooms and using what I already had. Simple as that! ;)

Simple Fall Front Porch

I’m starting to feel that crisp fall air a bit & craving pumpkin spice lattes, so fall must be close! I add a few simple touches to my front porch to help welcome my favorite season.

So far I have made a new wreath and added pinecones to the little planters.

I wanted a simple wreath with a natural look. This was so easy to make. I just used some flowing fall leaf stems and stuck them in a grapevine base starting at the top and working my way down. I wanted them to hang on the wreath base just as if they were growing on it.

To finish it off I hung my wreath from some green burlap ribbon. Another simple touch that I love.

I will probably add a few more things like some pumpkins and gourds, but for now I am feeling content with this simple look.

Domestically Speaking’s Countdown to Autumn Party

Family Room

Sweet Rene over at Cottage and Vine is having her monthly Room to Room Party. I’m a little later for the party, but I thought this it would be fun to link up and a good time to share the progress in my family room.

I am trying to lighten it up a little and bring in some more color…it’s feeling a little too brown. I have removed all of the red that was there and am slowly adding in pops of color and some different textures.

Here is my design board I shared with you a few months back. So far I have put up the curtains, painted the end table, taken away & added accessories here and there, and have put out some temporary pillows to play around with. It is still a work in process, but coming along!

I am really happy with how it is coming together so far. It’s feeling very cozy, very comfortable, very warm and very me…that is what I want for my home. :)

If I can ever get a good picture of my curtains I will show you them in more detail….I love the fabric and what they add to the room. The light behind it is making it difficult. I need to read a tutorial on taking my camera off of auto;)

If Your Belt Breaks, Make Something Out of It

My very favorite thrift store belt broke. I was sad. I love the warm worn leather…the metal details…the rustic quality…the story it may tell. I thought of ways to fix it and then it hit me…use it in a different way.

I’ve had these little mirrors from Hobby Lobby that were $2 each. I thought the elegant detail of the mirrors was a great contrast to the rustic belt. I used Gorilla Glue epoxy to attach them securely to belt. I add a piece on the bottom as well to finish off the look. I let it dry for a few hours just to make sure. Using my hand weights…I knew they were good for something;)

To make the hanger I simply looped some ribbon through the belt where the buckle would go. Again another contrast to the worn leather for a unique look.

What do you think? It is now one of my favorite pieces in my home and a reminder to think outside the box!

Easy Chalkboard

This is my very inexpensive chalkboard.

I found this little rooster plaque at Hobby Lobby for a few bucks. I loved the frame, but the metal insert doesn’t really fit my decor. I simply popped out the rooster and put in a dollar store canvas. I had to trim it down a little, but it was easy to do. I just measured and cut. Once I new my canvas fit I took it out and gave it a few coats of chalkboard paint. Note: This was the first time ever I had used chalkboard paint…I know, where have I been? ;)

And, here she is! So inexpensive… Easy to put together & I love it. Remember if there is part of something you love and part you’re not so crazy about see if you can change it up. I love the lines and color of the frame and wanted to use it somehow and I found a simple way to do so. Sometimes if it is too much work or costly to do it’s not worth it, but if it is an easy fix like this then go for it!

DIY Bittersweet Pottery Barn Wreath

I am getting very excited about my favorite upcoming season…ahhh, Fall. I was looking through my stash of fall and found a bunch of bittersweet stems that my grandma had given me. I decided to put them to use. I usually use more muted colors, but I must be craving some excitement in my life because I was loving the pop of bright orange.

I rounded up a small grapevine wreath, along with some floral wire, wire snips, ribbon and moss. The wreath base I used is a more open one so I simply wove my stems throughout. If you have more of tight weaved wreath you would simply bend the stem how you want it and secure with your floral wire. Using wired stems helps in shaping them and securing them to the wreath. I bent the stems around in the same direction, positioning them all slightly different to add dimension. There is no right or wrong. I also decided to stick some moss in mine and hang it from some velvet ribbon…Just cuz.

5 minutes later… It was finished.

So, as I was writing this blog post I Googled ‘bittersweet’ to see if A. these were in fact bittersweet vines like I thought, and B. it was one word or two. (yes I do that often;) And what do ya know, this little PB wreath popped up. I am sure I have seen it before & it was probably cataloged in my brain somewhere, so I decided to show you the comparison and give PB a little credit. ;)

I wanted the vines to look as if they grew right on this wreath so I went for a more asymmetrical look. I do love Pottery Barn’s. It is lovely, but sorry, not $59 lovely. I’m sure you could even find bittersweet vines that are more similar to these and make your own for under $10.

Here I added some more vines to show you how you can give it a little fuller look if your prefer. That is the awesome thing about making it yourself friends…not only cheaper, but you can customize it to your liking!! Double bonus.

A Touch of Fall

Hey, do you remember when someone used to actually post on this blog? haha;) Well school is back in session, our lives around here are somewhat back to normal(I of course use ‘normal’ very loosely;), and I am starting to get a routine back in place… I have even been putting in a little bit of Fall Decor out!

French Bucket Arrangement

Like I have mentioned, I am working on updating our family room. Lightening it up…adding some different colors and making it feel less… brown. Here is another example of how paint can totally transform a piece of furniture.

I’ve had this little Pottery Barn end table for 12 years! I bought it when we were first married & I was working as an apprentice at my mom’s hair salon. We were really tight on money so using my hard earned $49 at the PB outlet seemed like a huge, frivolous purchase. I think I have got my money’s worth by now. ;)

It is sturdy and functional, but just not cohesive with the direction I am headed style wise in this space. By simply painting it and changing the hardware, it has taken on a whole new look…and I like it mucho better now!

To achieve my desired look, I first used Martha Stewart’s Cobblestone paint and then a layer of Martha’s Flagstone, painting in a very casual manner. I sanded the edges a little and I may even add some glaze to give even more contrast and distressing. I bought my knobs on Ebay for $2 each & I lightly dry brushed them as well as the existing hardware with the same paint.

It’s coming together people!! I am feeling excited about the direction I’m headed with the updates. It already feels some much better in there!

Put Some Meaning in Your Decor

Using numbers in home decor is nothing new, but if you use numbers with special meaning it can add such a personal touch to your home along with being an interesting conversation piece.

I had been wanting to incorporate the number 96 into our family room for a while, so when I saw Leen the Graphics Queen was doing a fundraiser with her number decals, I thought it was a great time to order my numbers. She was raising money for the tornado victims and ended up raising $500! (You can read about it {HERE}.) Thanks Leen for wonderful decals, excellent customer service and for lending help to those in need.:)

I have had these wood candle chargers for years and they were just collecting dust. I lightly painted them with the Glidden paint sample I used on my little mirror. Next, I simply attached my number decals. I then took some tape and pressed in on the paint in a few areas to give a more worn look.

Easy as that!

I love projects like this…super easy, a meaningful display and definitely one of a kind.

They don’t have a permanent home as of yet, but I really am pleased with how they turned out and I know they will add character & interest to our family room. *BTW, for some reason in the pictures the 9 looks duller than the 6, but it really isn’t*

Oh, & why 96 you ask? It’s the year Mr. Husband & I met…aww, presh, I know;)

I’ve had this little mirror for years, but as of late she’s just been chillin’ in storage.

I love the shape of it and the details on the edges, but I was over the flowers and wanted some color added to our family room. I very casually painted the frame leaving the edges alone for a layered & aged look.

~I used a little sample bottle of Glidden paint called Slate Green. I love using these samples for small projects like this. Since I wanted a ‘not-so-perfect’ look for this mirror I evened used the little brush included to paint. ~

Literally took me under 5 minutes…what do you think?

Simple Playroom Art~On the Cheap

I really am going to finish our playroom one day…PROMISE! Here is some more proof that I am working on it. This was soo easy and under $5 for all three!

I had a few 12” x 12” boxes that I ~~was hoarding~~ had saved from some frames I bought on Ebay. I spray painted them in a sweet yellow and then attached this too cute scrapbook paper to them with Mod Podge.

Next I attached some doilies I had with small dabs of hot glue. {You can find these at the dollar store as well.} A few little paper flower embellishments in the centers and that was it. Easy right? I think they turned out pretty cute and I am feeling motivated to get moving on the rest of the playroom. afterweplayatourlakehousethisweekendthatis;)

Master Bath & Drop Cloth Valance

My master bathroom is definitely a work in progress. But I’ve decided that if I wait to show my house as a completed project, it will never be shared. ;)

Sooo, here is my drop cloth valance/Target clearance panels. I am headed for a rustic-chic-cottage feel in my bathroom. Like I said… a work in progress

These are my beyond simple and inexpensive curtains. To get the rustic chic vibe going I used a drop cloth and simply draped it over my curtain rod in half. Then I pulled it up in three areas and tied it with jute twine. Because the drop cloth is so sturdy, it effortlessly gave me the billowing effect I was after.

Next I took a $5 clearance panel from Target, cut it in half and put one half on each side of my valance. I love the contrast of the somewhat formal damask paired with the simple and casual cloth.

The ceilings are really high in here so I took advantage of that by hanging my curtain rod about 6-8” above the window. This lifted everything up as well as letting in all of the beautiful natural light.(the same beautiful natural back light that made for some not so great pictures.;)

I’m feeling really happy about how it is coming together so far. A little more color and texture to come in this space, so stay tuned. I am working on getting our master bedroom & bath a serene relaxing retreat. It has always taken the back burner, but not any more! What about you guys? Is your master bedroom a relaxing sanctuary like I am after, or has it been neglected as well?

Adding Some Character

Have you ever dissected a piece of furniture or home decor that you love to see what it is exactly that you love about it?

For me it is usually in the little unique details.

Enter these woven baskets with lids.

I bought these on super clearance for like $15 for all three. They are fine as is…. Nice basic baskets, but nothing to write home about.

But by simply adding a little detail, they suddenly look interesting and unique. I just tied on some old metal pieces I already had with twine and a few minutes later…some instant character to my boring baskets.

I really love them now.

Look around and notice what you like and why. Then see how you can turn what you already have into something you love!

Quick Fix {Furry, Fuzzy Ottoman}

Do you have small little projects waiting for you, but you keep putting them off? I don’t know why I do this, but I let a 5 min something loom over my head for 5 weeks! Dumb. ANYWAY…

Our poor little ottoman has seen better days. I bought it a few years back and it has served us well housing many different items as well as propping up tired feet.

During last few weeks it took a turn for the worse. The fabric suddenly popped open and was in desperate need of some recovering. I have been ~~completely putting it off~~ deciding what fabric to use, but in the meantime it was a huge eyesore in our family room. I was thinking of doing something more interesting like The Nester’s fur ottoman, but never got around to finding some fur like hers.

Well, last week I was in my Grandma’s sewing room {which is more like a mini fabric store} and I saw this faux fur. She gladly offered it to me to try out...{because she is wonderfully awesome like that!}

Literally less than 5 minutes later.

It was so simple but makes such a difference. It’s a bit shorter than The Nester’s, but I quite like it’s new fuzzy coat and it is super soft!

I have a few more of these simple little tasks that I know will make a big difference. If you are in the same boat, lets knock out some of these smaller projects that help our homes feel more put together, ultimately removing some clutter from our brains…are ya with me?! ;)

Please excuse my excessive enthusiasm over such a small project, but I’ve been such a slack job lately, it feels GREAT!

Lovely Little Desk

I have mentioned before that I am {slowly} working on turning our guest room into a playroom. I’ve completed a few projects here and there so hopefully soon it will all come together. One more project down…

I found this little desk for $5 at a thrift store and I thought with a little love it would be a perfect little homework or art station. Beautiful, right? ;)

A little sanding, painting, wood appliqué-ing distressing, and cute {clearance} knob-afying later…

Isn’t she sweet?

Almost makes me want to pull a little chair up and write a poem or short story.

I applied the little wood appliqué on the bottom because it was just screaming for one, plus I wanted to feminize it a bit.

*TIP-Adding appliqués like this is a great, inexpensive way to add character and customize your thrift store pieces. Also, I stained the appliqué first to match the wood on the desk so when it was painted and sanded it would look the same color as the rest of the desk.

I used a few coats of flat white spray paint to cover. Then I sanded the edges and added some glaze to give it more antiquing. The precious little knobs were a steal at TJ Maxx. (Like $3 for all of them.) LOVE.

*TIP- Unique knobs make a huge difference…check out the before with the basic wood knobs. By simply adding some color and detail with knobs, this piece takes on instant charm with a whole new look.

What I’ve Been Working On

This isn’t gonna be pretty, but I thought I’d give ya a peek inside my house & show you what I’ve up to lately with my Family Room Update.

We finally hung my new curtain rod & casually stuck up the curtains…err, fabric. Or as the Nester says, window “mistreatments” :)

I LOVE the fabric and not just because I snagged it for a steal. It’s pretty, nice quality and it has deer on it. What more could I want?!

So here it is… {crappy picture} Ladder, drill, haphazard decor, mess and all.

I promise it will look better soon!

{Creative} Bathroom Storage

I have had this lovely towel rack for a few years, but I can never keep towels in it and when I do they stay for too long and look dusty and flat. So after a few months of staring at it’s emptiness, I came up with an alternative use for it.

Over the toilet storage.

First things first. Eat your oatmeal. It is good for you.

I saved the oatmeal containers. At least the ones Mr. Husband didn’t dispose of. Next I covered them in scraps of fabric and burlap using spray adhesive and hot glue for the edges. I just put the hot glue along the edge and folded in the fabric.

There ya have it. I might make one more big one & two smaller ones…we’ll see. But for now it already feels a little nicer and more organize in our little komodo.

This way we can have air freshener, feminine products, etc. with in reach with out them sitting on the back of the toilet. They simply slide in the open side, out of sight, but with easy accessibility. Not that many guest frequent my master bath, but it feels nice to walk past and have it look a little put together.

*The pictures show the colors coming through the burlap, but in real life they don’t show. You could spray paint the containers first or use a lining or thicker fabric.*

I know you all might not have towel racks like this hanging around, but I am hoping this with at least get your creative juices flowing for reusing what you have in maybe a different way as well as recycling stuff we use everyday.

Spring Flowers

Good Morning :) My family and I just returned from a wonderful little Spring Break getaway. It was not the best weather, but still so nice to have a little reprieve from the day to day. I’m feeling rested and motivated to get my house all Spring cleaned and freshened up…starting with my front door.

For something a little different I decided on a spring planter.

I used an iron wall basket, but you could use a wicker basket or even find something more unique like a watering can or metal planter.

I put in foam blocks covered with moss {using wire and hot glue to secure the moss to the foam} and then just added in my (4) little flowering bushes. Bushes like this are great to use because they are so forgiving. You can insert them at different angles to have the flowers fall slightly over the edge. I wanted a full wild flower look…I may even go get some more to add in.

To add some rustic charm I tied a strip of burlap around the base of the iron basket. This also helps hold the moss all in. I purposely left the frays and strings of the burlap to give off a carefree natural feel.

There you have it…A super quick and simple project that gives color and interest to your front door. I hope my tips help you to create your own.

We finally had some ok lighting, so I wanted to share my Spring table I was working on last week.

I hope it inspires some Spring decorating in your home! :)

The little bird house was a garage sale freebie that I gave a mini makeover and attached to a candlestick. I will share the before with you later.

The sweet picture on the left is my Dad as a little toddler mowing the lawn…I love it! {Adding personal touches with photos again.}

The tiny bird nest on the left is a real one my girls found on the ground last summer.

Adding a Personal Touch with Photos

Using great family photos in your decor is a great way to add interest and character and really personalize your space.

I have always LOVED photos. Taking pictures, displaying pictures, even being in pictures…sometimes.;) Growing up I my room was plastered with photos of friends and family and every where I went I took pictures. In all the homes we have lived in I always had a lot of photos of family & friends displayed. For whatever reason in our current home I don’t have as many out.

Anyway, I am working on tweaking our family room.

I found this great fabric {for a steal!} to make my curtains out of.

I will be sharing the updates, but I am basically cutting out a lot of the reds and adding in more warmth and personality, like with some Family Photos.

I used the big mirror as a ledge to lean my pictures on. Get creative. You don’t have to just hang everything on the walls. Layering these frames like this, again adds interest and dimension to this wall. These are some of my favorite pictures and displaying them like this was an instant warm up for this room…and my heart. :)

Once I get the curtains up I will start on pillow, throws, etc.

Did you notice the new lamp shade? Much better.

I am also deciding what color to paint the little end table…any suggestions? :)

{last} Spring Table

{Dollar Store} Wire Cloche

Something about a ceramic bird ~~trapped~~ er… nested inside some sort of cloche or glass jar just screams Spring, don’t ya think? ;)

Well, here is a inexpensive & simple way to create your own wire cloche.

I picked up a few wire wastebaskets at the dollar store a while back wanting to do something like this with them. I just spray painted the basket in ‘Oregano’ and then added a metal finial with a bolt to the top (or bottom) of the basket.

*This finial is the sister to the one I used for my paper towel holder. They actually went on the end of a curtain rod. I just glued a bolt on the underside to attach it. You could use a knob as well or just glue it right on your basket.

I then put my new wire cloche on top of my Homemade Cake Stand.

Here is a lighter version…

Same wire cloche, just different cake stand and a crystal drawer knob.

I’ll be sure to share where my little cloche ends up.

Whimsical Spring Wreath Tutorial

I am dreaming of Spring…

so ready for brighter scenery and warmer weather.

{seasonal depression anyone?! ;)}

Well, if Mother Nature isn’t bringing it yet, at least we can bring it with our decor.

Here is a simple, fun and whimsical Spring wreath tutorial for ya. To brighten your day, & if I’m not alone in this…brighten your mood. :)

Materials

wispy grapevine wreath
moss flower or other spring like accent
silk poppies
boxwood greens
spring blossom stems
jute ribbon
hot glue
wire
moss

Start by hanging your wreath with your jute ribbon. You could do this at the end as well, but this way you won’t have to mess with your completed wreath.

Position your moss flower (mine is from Michaels) or other decorative piece where you would like,then secure with floral wire.

Next, add in your flowers with a bit of hot glue and wire if needed. Arrange them somewhat evenly without getting too much of a uniform look. You want them to look as if they are growing right out of the wreath. Cover up any stems with moss pieces…this adds more texture to the design while covering up glue drips, etc.

Now fill it in with your greens. Working around the center of the wreath in the direction of the grapevine. Then add in your longer blossoms and stems for a wispy three dimensional look. Keep adding until you reach your desired look. It’s your wreath, there is no right or wrong. :)

I hope this gets your creative juices flowing and gives you some inspiration and ideas for your Spring decor. :)

A Touch of {Green}

Here we go again…I’ve changed up my little cabinet for the new season. ;)

I’m bringing on the GREEN!

One reason being that it is March/St.Patrick’s Day and another being that I am so wishing for green outside!! I also wanted to keep it more simple and clean because I am feeling the need for a clean slate this time of year.

I brought out my garage sale shutters and stacked them up for some height and depth. I left the little wood box because it give some height plus we hide keys & stuff in the cubby on the back. Works nicely by the door. {Genius, I know.}

The only other things I added is my tin pitcher with some pussy willow branches and some Bells of Ireland (seemingly festive although they are not even native to Ireland), and a little ball of greens on a mossy birds nest.

I kept one of the little love birds from my Valentine Vignette nested on top of one of the thrift store candle sticks. Sadly, the other little love bird had a tragic death. Mr. Husband accidently knocked it off while putting on his coat one day. I told him I hoped it wasn’t a sign that our love was dying….He said it was a sign. A sign that I shouldn’t place breakable items near the coat rack. ba-dum ching ;)

What do ya think? Spring-y, clean and GREEN?

Oh good, because that’s what I was going for. :)

A Little Spring Spruce Up

Here is an EASY update for a functional {but otherwise boring} mail holder. I was garage sale-ing with my Grandma and we found this little guy for $1.00. It holds mail and opens up to house keys as well. She thought it would be nice on her desk. But, sorry Grams…it’s non cute.

So…..

By simply gluing on a wood appliqué it already looks better, right?

I then painted and sanded it and added some glaze. I took out the photo holder and added some burlap and a sweet sticker and slid it back under the cover.

There you go…

A simple, fast update to make a boring desk accessory more pleasing to the eye. :)

Wishing you all a happy {sunny} holiday weekend. It is going to be a little gray and cloudy here, but hopefully the sunshine with arrive soon.

My weekend will involve working on some more Spring for my Etsy shop, a night out with Mr. Husband and spending time with my little fam…

And to remind myself that gray is not always a dreary thing, I am sharing one of my newest designs, “Cottage Grays”. Gray can be calming and cozy, so that will be how I look and the gray skies this weekend. ;)

P.S. Do you spell it ‘gray’ or ‘grey’? I do both. Because I am crazy like that. I believe ‘gray’ is the Americanized version. Just curious. ;)

Valentine Wreath Tutorial

It is a little late, but I am going to keep my word.;) Here is a simple way to create a Valentine wreath like the one in my Valentine Vignette.

You will need:

a wispy wreath base
berry garland
burlap ribbon
decorative heart
faux greens

I started with a wispy twig wreath base, to which I added in a pip berry beaded garland. I just formed it around the center of the wreath and attached it with wire. Once it is attached you can pull out the pieces and berries to sort of ‘fluff’ it or fill it out. This little step makes a big difference. I then took my burlap ribbon and looped it around the back of the wreath to anchor my wood heart.

I placed the heart where I wanted it and tied the ribbon around with a looped knot. To do this I just tie a knot with out pulling one side all the way through. This heart has a wire hanger which I attached to the wreath base as well to make it more secure. You could use some hot glue as well or more wire behind it.

And finally, For a pop of color and to put a little ‘spring’ in the wreath I tucked some greens into the ribbon.

There you go:)

An {easy} sweet and simple Valentine-y addition to your home.

Ribbon & Boa Wreath {Valentine’s Day Idea}

I wanted to share with you the wreath I made my little sis for Christmas. I know you have seen ribbon wreaths before and you might remember the tulle one I made for my daughter…but I thought this one’s fun colors might spark some ideas for Valentines Day decor.

To make this I chose ribbon to match her room and cut it is strips. I used different textures and widths and even cut it in different lengths to give a lot of dimension. For some extra sass I added in the hot pink boa. Then I just simply tied the pieces all around a 12” wreath. No particular order…just kept tying until I achieved the desired look. There is no wrong or right here:)

To finish it I cut out the first initial of her name and cover it in coordinating paper. I printed out the letter off of my computer to make a stencil and traced it out of thin cardboard I had on hand. The paper was just a digital scrapbook paper I had that I printed out as well.

I then hung it from a ribbon and she was complete!

For a Valentine flair you could attach a hang tag with “love” or “kisses” or a fun phrase, like I did “play” on my daughter’s wreath.

This took so little time and was super easy to make. Try one out yourself or make it a fun Valentine project with you kids! :) XOXO

Feeling the LOVE

I don’t do a ton of Decorating for Valentine’s Day, but I do like to give it some recognition. January is always kind of blah and it feels good come February to enjoy another Holiday and brighten up my home with maybe some hope for Spring to arrive soon! I know there are cynics out there who are not fans of this holiday, but I have many fond memories of it. Why not have another reason to celebrate and spread love, right? Plus our wedding anniversary is the 16th so it makes it even that much more special in our home. :)

Here is a simple display that I quickly put together. I kept a few pieces from my Santa vignette and added to them. I ‘loved’ up a twig wreath to hang above the cabinet and added a rose picture I had in my stash. {watch for the super easy tutorial!}

I also changed out the shade of my lamp with a $2 thrift store shade to which added the beautiful ribbon my aunt gave me. Do you remember the ribbon from my July 4th decor? I love it! & added in with all this, it screams Valentine’s Day.

A few love birds on my vintage scale and some more green to encourage the Spring feeling. I shaped my little berry wreath into a heart as well. I also kept my thrift store candle stick trio from before…think romantic candlelight….minus the candlelight…but it implies an idea, right? lol ;)

By simply combining your everyday decor of “Valentine” colors or theme, you can create a subtle touch of the LOVE it your home. Don’t be afraid to move things around in your home and use them in a different way.

The Day to Day

I am so empowered by the many braves souls who have linked up to The Decor Chick’s Party that I decided to bite the bullet and join in. So many times I get overwhelmed with my own life and wonder why I can’t do it all like ‘so & so’. In blogland and magazines everybody’s lives look clean and organized and PERFECT! I am sure in some cases this is true, but I am pretty sure in most cases we are all just humans trying to do our best and enjoy life along the way.

Without further ado…

The Kitchen.

Now I am going to be honest with you. The day I took these pictures was a mild kitchen mess day. Not sure why it looked somewhat decent, but the mornings it looks like this are ‘good’ days. ;)

The Family Room.

This is pretty typical of our family room on a day to day basis. It seems as though no matter what I do ‘stuff’ just appears. And MAGICALLY reappears.

On this given day we have quite an array of items…laundry, cinnamon bears, puppy pee pee cleaner, jelly toast and because a nice Christmas story is always a great read mid January…a basket of Christmas books!

I must say I do love the vignette on the side table. Starbursts, a pillow and strategically placed crooked lamp shade. ;) Have a seat on the bench, lean back and relax… on the garland! Haha, I love how things end up in odd places.

The Garage Entry and Dreaded Laundry Room.

I like to make it as hard as possible to get inside these doors, you know, to deter intruders. My laundry room is not spacious and I know you have heard be whine about it and my lack of mudroom before, but you can see the usual outcome of the situation. Don’t you think the new puppy crate fits perfectly in the area?

Whoa, I need to go clean something now…feeling overwhelmed;) Good thing we aren’t alone, right? I could have shared LOTS of unfinished projects, and even more unorganized rooms, but I didn’t want you to stop reading my blog all together or call TLC & put me on Hoarders! lol:)

That is the beauty of a new day…to learn and grow and try to be your best self and do better. Let’s not be too hard on ourselves. Try to to take it all in stride, don’t sweat the small stuff, and remember what is most important in your life.

Scottish Terrier Print {Idea from Ballard}

When I saw this print in the Ballard catalog I LOVED it immediately knew I wanted it for my Mom’s Christmas gift. She has 3 Scottish Terriers {which are her babies} and this vintage print catches the “scottie” perfectly. I love to give a personal Christmas gift with a lot of thought, especially to my wonderful Mom.

I did not however love the $169.oo price tag. ;)

So as I read about the print I found that it was a copy of an illustration in a children's book from the 1930’s by an artist named Diana Thorne.

Which made it even more perfect because my mom loves Scottie’s, antiques and she is a talented artist…score!:)

I checked on Ebay and found a page out of this book with the illustration for $14.99. It was an 8x10 nicely matted in an acid free 11 x 14 mat. (The seller was great by the way!) I bought a frame from Joanns at 60% off and put in the sweet little book page. Mind you the Ballard on is bigger at 27 x 27, but I achieved the overall look for a fraction of the price!

I bought a smaller coordinating one as well.

I love them and my Mom was really excited and touched:)

Sorry the pictures aren’t great, it was sort of an afterthought to share this with you. But seriously look how easy inexpensive it can be to duplicate something that may be out of your budget….

AND doing it yourself is definitely more rewarding!

So if there was an Amazing Slacker Blogger award going around I am sure I would have been awarded a few! I have done a big fat nothin’ when it comes to fun new projects or decorating. I think I was completely physically and emotionally exhausted so honestly this little hiatus has felt nice. I wish I was Super Woman, but unfortunately I am far from! ;)

We did have a wonderful Christmas here! I hope you all enjoyed the Holidays and I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year!

Oh, I did miraculously manage to get all my Christmas down {before February} and put some Dollar store snowflakes on my mantel for a wintery vibe.

Don’t act like you’re not impressed. ;)

A Christmas Breakfast Tradition {German Pancakes}

This is a family favorite of ours passed down from my Grandmother.

You may know of these, but I thought I would share the recipe today from my family to yours, because they are soooo good… and easy!

We have always made them on Christmas morn., although it seems like we make them more and more in between now.;) We made them this year as we were frolicking and putting up Christmas decor. There was fresh falling snow, Christmas music and happy kids. A perfect day.

You will need…

6 eggs
1 C milk
1 C flour
1/2 tsp salt
5T butter

Preheat oven to 450 F

Beat eggs until thick and lemon colored. Mix in flour, milk and salt.

Melt butter in a 9x12 pan in you heating oven. Carefully remove and then pour in your batter. Return to oven and bake for 15-20 minutes.

Watch the magic happen. We love to see how puffy and big they will get…the kids favorite part! {next to eating them;)} This was a good growing batch.

My little one decided to do this while she waited. As I watched her find so much joy in simply throwing the fresh snow up in the air, I was envious. Do you remember when you found pure happiness in such a little thing? She was all by herself, running around just enjoying the moment.

Check at 15 minutes and if they look about like this, they are finished.

Yes. That is butter. …I didn’t say they were healthy;)

And ENJOY!

You can top them with the usual pancake toppings. Mr. Husband like PB and syrup, big sis likes just syrup an little sis likes raspberry jelly.:)

Deck the Stairs with Boughs of…Winter Greens

I usually do a grand pine garland on my staircase…this year I had a few setbacks so it was a simple take on Christmas stairs and I have to say I love it!

I tied little swags to the banisters with burlap ribbon and then hung coordinating ones on the scones going up the stairs.

I already had these little fellas, as I used them in my garland from last year. So it was easy AND didn’t cost me anything but the ribbon!

I was a little bummed I didn’t get my usual greenery up, but making sure all you greenery is up is not what the season is about. Just making your home feel the Spirit of the Holidays with little special touches is enough. Taking time to enjoy the season with friends and family is time well spent.

Our Christmas Tree

Our Christmas tree resides in the front formal living room. One of my favorite rooms in my house that I like to sneak off to for a little quiet time.;) During the holidays it’s an even better spot to relax in with my morning coffee and evening tea, because of the Christmas tree!! {yes I do enjoy my warm beverages!;)}

Our tree has a somewhat traditional look and it is a little different each year.

I love this tapestry ribbon I bought from Target a couple years ago…it is warm and rich and feels classic and Christmas to me. I mixed in some flowers and berries and different types of leaves and greenery to give different textures and dimension to the tree. Pinecones of course, and curly willow branches as well.

The bay window is the perfect spot to showcase the tree and I love how it looks from the street.

I found these aged mirrors at Big Lots about 4 years ago and thought they would be a fun and unique addition. I just stuck some tulle ribbon through the hanger on the back and tied them to a branch. I have a little baby’s first Christmas ornament for each my girls…they love unwrapping them each year and hanging them on the tree. A lot of the tree my girls had a hand in decorating. I like a beautiful tree, but I also want my family to have the excitement and memories of decorating it together. That is part of the magical Christmas experience. :) I want to collect more ornaments with meaning to bring the memories of Christmas’ past each year.

The tree skirt is just a piece of remnant decorators fabric I picked up for about $3…I just wrapped it around the base and tucked in the edges.

Oh and please pardon the crooked star…;) It keeps falling!

It’s not perfect, but it’s our tree and I love all in represents. Traditions, family and the meaning of Christmas.

Now I need to do some shopping to fill the bottom up! Ack! ;0

Simple Magnolia Leaf Garland

I LOVE Magnolia Leaves.

I need a little something over my fireplace in our formal living room and I had some fresh Magnolia leaves that I wanted to use in my holiday decorating. I decided to make a simple garland made of burlap ribbon, jute twine and my leaves.

I started by tying 3 leaves together in a little bunch…all different sizes. I did this four times and then simply measured out the length of ribbon I wanted. I attached each bunch to the ribbon with jute making sure they were evenly spaced. I just eyeballed it, but you could measure.;) I left the ends of my ribbon a little longer so they could hang a bit and that was it!

I love the simplicity of it and like how it compliments my nativity decor above. All it took was a few minutes and a few bucks!

Whimsical {Gingerbread Man} Christmas Wreath

I wanted to share with you an custom order I just completed for a sweet customer. It is a little different than what I usually create, but it was so fun and I think it turned out really cute. :)

The square base is made of grapevine. I just added in a few different types of pine…some sparkly and metallic. I then mixed in bells, frosted berries, some fun little ornaments, and a little gingerbread man.

I haven’t had a lot of time to make new Christmas decor for my home but I have had fun creating for others!

Displaying My {Christmas} Dishes

A few years after Mr. Husband and I were married, my wonderful Grandma gave me these pretty dishes for Christmas. I love them. Another few years later, my other wonderful Grandma finished the set for me! A girl tends to feel the Gma love when they are the only granddaughter on both sides for 17 years. ;)

I have had this little plate rack for 11 years and I still really like it. It lives in my breakfast nook and I like to change out my dishes for the seasons. I usually keep these dishes out all winter long…

To compliment the dishes, this years I went for a natural outdoorsy look using pinecones, twigs, moss, greens and even a little birdie.(remember him?)

I just gathered things that I already had.

I love my little pinecone garland… I have had it for years as well, but I’m thinking it wouldn’t be too tough to make. A little jute twine, pine cones and a drill?

I made the little moss trees last year when I was on my moss tree kick. ;)

The leaves and vase are from flowers my sweet friends sent me a couple week ago, after I had surgery. The gorgeous flowers had passed on, but the greens were still looking nice so I simply kept them out and put them back in the vase. They pull color out of the dishes and tie in with the books and apothecary jars. ~these jars were actually used in my Spring Vignette too;)~ Backing all of this you’ll find a twig frame I made by simply tying twigs with twine.

On the buffet below, I have the coordinating Christmas tree platter and an old rustic toolbox my grandpa made when he was younger that I filled with more pinecones. I added my little garage sale find on the end. If you follow me on Twitter, you might remember when I found her. It’s a little pewter coffee warmer carafe thingy and it was only $2…for real! I love it.
